Event Information

Horizons at Cristo Rey Philadelphia

Horizons at Cristo Rey is closing the achievement gap by providing underserved children access to high-quality academics in an engaging summer program. Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School will implement the Horizons program in partnership with Kenderton Elementary, the public K-8 neighborhood school that serves most of the Nicetown-Tioga section of North Philadelphia.

Based on a proven model of success, Horizons at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School will enroll 30 kindergarten and 1st grade students beginning the Summer of 2021.

What is Horizons?

Horizons is a national program to end learning loss, and since 1964 has been serving students from under-resourced communities. Their model provides a 6 week, tuition-free, full day summer program offering academics, swimming and enrichment. Families are asked to make a long term commitment as students begin the program in Kindergarten and return each summer through 8th grade.

Why Kenderton Elementary School?

Kenderton is located less than half a mile from the Cristo Rey High School in Nicetown-Tioga. Through insights from the school's principal and teachers, we know that this is a school community that would benefit tremendously from the Horizons program. Kenderton students are no less capable than students in more well-resourced neighborhoods, however they are afforded less opportunities. We are committed to bring additional resources to our community and to increase the academic outcomes of as many students as we are able to reach, therefore Kenderton is a perfect fit.

The Achievement Gap:

The achievement gap between low-income children and their more affluent peers begins prior to kindergarten,  and without intervention, will continue to widen to nearly three grade levels by fifth grade. Unfortunately, summer learning loss is a major contributor to the achievement gap.

We know that this pandemic will expand the achievement gap and that it will take a collaborative effort to reach our most vulnerable children. Horizons at Cristo Rey will help ensure that all children have access to high quality education and reduce the gap.

But, what about the Fitraiser?

The Horizons Fitraiser will take place on Saturday, February 6th at 9am. There will be two components starting with a 30-minute presentation on Horizons, Kenderton Elementary, and why Cristo Rey has chosen to implement this program.

The second component is a group ride/walk/run starting at 9:45am. This will be a synchronized 30-minute ride/run/walk guided by a pre-recorded, on demand Peloton class. Participants will have the option of joining on a Peloton Bike or Treadmill or using a traditional stationary bike or treadmill. Peloton does offer a 30-day free trial for those who do not have a membership, which will give “athletes” access to the class.

As a supporter of this fundraiser, you will be recognized as a Founding Partner of the Horizons at Cristo Rey program. Those who wish to participate in the Group Ride will receive a sign-up link after they have made a donation.  We hope that you will join our school community in this collaborative effort!
