My name is June Simonelli, and I am writing this with a very heavy heart as the grandmother of my beloved 31-year-old grandson, Nathaniel Losee.

Nathaniel has always been such a good young man — kind, respectful, and full of love for his family and his country. Nathaniel was deployed to Syria as a member of Operations Inherent Resolve and The Global War on Terrorism where he experienced attacks on his base and combat operations. After serving honorably in the military, he returned home as a disabled veteran. Instead of focusing only on his own struggles PTSD and injuries, he has spent his time volunteering with several veterans' organizations and working tirelessly as an advocate helping other veterans secure the VA benefits they earned. He has the biggest heart of anyone I know. He’s the grandson who calls just to check on me, makes me laugh, helps anyone in need, and always tries to do the right thing.

In April, something terrible happened. Nathaniel was set up and viciously attacked by two much larger males in Walker County, Texas. While defending his own life, he seriously injured one of the attackers. It was clearly self-defense, yet instead of being treated as the victim, he was arrested and taken to jail. He is now sitting in a cell, with a concussion, fractured orbital, eye pain and blurred vision, fluid / blood in his ears, multiple bruises on the back of his head and rib cage and is being refused for the medical treatment he needs. He also suffers from his previous service related injures while waiting on a $50,000 bond. He needs help so he can come home and be treated while we fight this case.

We are also facing approximately $60,000 in attorney fees and legal costs to properly prove he acted in self-defense and clear his name. As an older woman on a fixed income, and with our family already stretched thin, this feels impossible for us to handle alone.

I am humbly begging for help for my grandson. He has already given so much to the country he loves and to helping other veterans. He does not deserve to be locked away simply for protecting himself. Nathaniel is a good soul who has always tried to make the world better.
