On October 27, at the Virginia Theatre Association Conference, Stafford High School competed against schools from the entire state of Virginia and won first place in the High School Theatre Festival with our production of ON THE VERGE by Eric Overmyer. This is a state championship, and it also means that Stafford High School will go on to represent Virginia at the Southeastern Theatre Conference, the nation’s oldest and largest theatre conference, in Mobile, Alabama in March, 2014.
We are so very proud of the hard work of our students, and because the trip to Mobile will be an expensive one, we are hoping to raise $23,000, and we greatly need the help and support of our community in order to attend and represent our school, our county and our state. We are hoping that our community will rally and help us raise the funds, and the first step in that is to get the word out in every way possible.
At SETC, the top 20 plays from the ten southeastern states compete for the honor of being named Best Play in the national region. It is a tremendous honor, and, in our case, an instance of "lightning striking twice." We actually placed second at VTA two years ago, and then went on to win first place at SETC. This was the first time in 20 years that Virginia won this honor, and the first time in its 63 year history that a school from Stafford County did so.
We will present our production of ON THE VERGE at the Mobile Civic Theatre where we will hope to once again bring the title of SETC champion home to Virginia.
